Hospital’s replacement opens amid scandal over doc, dosages

GROVE CITY, Ohio – An Ohio health system is opening a new hospital in suburban Columbus as it deals with a scandal involving a doctor accused of ordering excessive painkiller doses for dozens of patients who died. The 210-bed Mount Carmel Grove City hospital opens Sunday. Mount Carmel Health System is moving inpatient services and hundreds of employees to the $361 million facility from Mount Carmel West, the flagship hospital it’s closing in the lower-income Franklinton neighborhood. That plan was underway long before West became the focus of allegations about now-fired doctor William Husel (HYOO’-suhl), who’s under investigation. In response to lawsuits, he denies negligently or intentionally causing deaths. Trending in US Original Article : HERE ; This post was …

How Did A Man Survive Without Eating Food For 382 Days?

There’s an urban legend that speaks of a man who managed to shed over (113 kilograms) 250 pounds simply by not eating anything for over a year. But is it actually possible for the human body to go without food for this long? Remarkably, this strange story isn’t just a modern-day folk tale, it appears to have actually happened, albeit with one or two minor caveats.  Published in the Postgraduate Medical Journal in 1973, a case study by doctors at the University of Dundee School of Medicine documents the story of a “grossly obese” 27-year-old man in Scotland undergoing 382 days of fasting in an attempt to lose weight. Staggeringly, the man appeared to reduce his weight from 206 kilograms to 81 …

169 Million Kids Weren’t Vaccinated Against Measles Between 2010 And 2017

It’s World Immunization Week and the world’s first malaria vaccine has just begun an exciting new pilot program in Malawi. However, putting a downer on this good news, a new analysis by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that the measles vaccine, which was invented in 1963, still isn’t reaching enough people thanks to flawed medical systems, limited health care access, and the rising tide of anti-vaxxers.    The result: Measles is making a rapid comeback, with 110,000 cases so far in 2019, a 300 percent increase on the same period last year. The data shows that across the globe, 169 million children didn’t receive the first dose of the measles vaccine between 2010 and 2017. That’s 21.1 million …

Putting A Bandage That Blends In With His Skin Has Brought Up An Emotional Reaction From This Man

If the thought of not having your color of skin represented in many products never crossed your mind, consider yourself privileged. Last week, one man’s tweet has struck a chord with people on Twitter and it was a learning moment for many. Something as trivial as a bandage has made Dominique Apollon, a 45-year old researcher for racial justice, emotional. For the first time in his life, the man put on a bandage on his cut and it matched the color of his skin. For some, it may seem insignificant but the overwhelming response from people has proved that even the most minor things do matter when it comes to representation. Last week, Dominique Apollon shared a tweet about wearing …

The most hacked band password is ‘Blink-182’

What's my password again, what's my password again?Image: Getty Images The world is awash in ’90s nostalgia — and it’s even showing up in our passwords. A new study from the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has revealed the world’s most easily hacked passwords, CNN reports. The top no-brainer passwords overall are impersonal number combinations, like 12345. But in the category of “bands,” the most breached password is the name of the popular ’90s pop-punk outfit, Blink-182.  SEE ALSO: Even experts think some pa$$w0rd-strength requirements are dumb That means that if you’re part of the apparently enormous group of people who use their passwords to pay homage to the spirit of teenage rebellion, you’re at risk of getting hacked.  …

Medicaid expansion tied to positive gains for black babies

(CNN)A major part of the Affordable Care Act — the expansion of the Medicaid program — may play a role in shrinking the gap in premature birth and low birth weight between black and white infants born in the United States, according to a new study. Black infants are about twice as likely to be born at low birth weight and 1.5 times as likely to be born prematurely than white infants. Sign up here to get The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta every Tuesday from the CNN Health team. “Finally, we believe that important causes of all outcomes — and also causes of racial disparities in outcomes — arise from differences in women’s health before they ever …

Tracking the toxic air that’s killing millions

What does air pollution do to our bodies? The tech that could help clean dirty air Watch how pollution moves across Europe The Alan Turing Institute, a research centre specialising in data science and artificial intelligence (AI), has been developing a programme that can sift through vast quantities of real time data from more than 1,200 remote sensors across the Greater London area. One Blood Type In Particular Has A Protective Effect Against Severe Malaria

Sometimes it is the tiniest of buggers that deal the largest of blows. This is none more true than for the wispy mosquito – we’ve tried to smash them, poison them, de-fertilize them, and yet, they still live to bite another day. They are the ultimate vectors of disease and destruction, killing more humans than humans themselves in 2013. Perhaps to deal with mosquitos then, we first have to look at ourselves and learn what makes us so vulnerable to their seed-sized bodies. A new meta-analysis of blood type on susceptibility to severe malaria does just that, confirming the notion that those with O type blood are more protected from severe, fatal malaria than other blood types. Unfortunately, those of you with blood …
