Jason Manford shares mental health battle

‘Not failing’ “It’s taken me this long to be brave enough to say it… I’ve been struggling, you know, finding things hard and I think sometimes social media can not help with that,” he said. Manford said it was not just trolls but also “bad news and nastiness… even down to comparing your life”. The father of five said he suffers from anxiety and depression and at his lowest, he “felt like I’d let my kids down and I couldn’t do my job any more”. Manford said he wanted to pass on the advice he was given that “still gets me through to this day”, which was “just because you’re struggling, doesn’t mean you’re failing”. “The next time you’re struggling, …

Never underestimate a wasp — new study shows they’re smarter than we thought

(CNN)Summer is approaching in the northern hemisphere, heralding the return of that great scourge of al fresco diners everywhere: the wasp. In recent decades, however, scientists have shown that vertebrate animals such as birds, monkeys and fish also have this ability, known as transitive inference (TI). And Elizabeth Tibbetts, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Michigan, has found the first evidence of TI in an invertebrate animal — namely the paper wasp. The insects, which are found around the world, are known for making distinctive nests out of chewed wood mixed with saliva that look like paper. While the paper wasp’s sting is toxic to humans, it is less painful than those of other wasp species. A previous study …

Two People Have Been Diagnosed With HIV After Getting “Vampire Facials”

Two people have been diagnosed with HIV after receiving a “vampire facial” cosmetic treatment at a spa in New Mexico last year. The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is now investigating the VIP Spa in Albuquerque and urging anyone who visited the spa between May and September 2018 to report for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C testing. The two people who recently tested positive for HIV both received “injection-related procedures” at the VIP Spa and were found to have contracted the same strain of the virus. According to the NMDOH, these two factors increase the likelihood of the HIV infection being linked to the VIP Spa. The spa was known for offering customers a “vampire facial”, also known …

Be careful when cracking your neck. A 28-year-old man had a stroke popping his neck

(CNN)Josh Hader had a sore neck, so he tried to stretch it out, accidentally popping it. The next thing he knew, the left side of his body started to go numb. “When he popped his neck, he tore arteries that go to the bone of the neck, where the neck joins the skull at the base of the brain,” he said. “The way he twisted the neck caused a bisection.” Hader’s father-in-law took him to the ER, where health care workers administered him TPA, which breaks up clots, Hader said. After that, he was transported to the larger Mercy Hospital and was in the intensive-care unit for four days before being sent to inpatient therapy. “When he arrived, Hader had …

The economy is great, so why are so many Democrats running for White House?

(CNN)With an economy as strong as the one that the nation currently enjoys — 3.2% growth in this year’s first quarter — President Donald Trump should be feeling pretty good about his prospects for re-election. In post-WWII history, the only presidents who have failed to win re-election struggled with a tough economy (Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush), or decided not to run (Harry Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson). Added to his struggle with national approval, the fallout from Robert Mueller’s report seems to be further eroding his reputation. While only 37% of Americans say that they support moving forward with impeachment, nearly six out of ten believe that the President lied in matters under investigation by the …

Adults get active shooter lessons from a surprising, but unfortunately well-qualified teacher.

“If there was an active shooter, you’d all be dead,” Kayleigh, an elementary school-aged girl introduced as an “expert” bluntly tells a group of adult workers assembled in their office mail room for a team building event. “When you talk out loud, the shooter can tell where you are and where you’re hiding,” she continues. “Sometimes we play the game ‘who can stay quietest the longest’ so we all remember.” The adults look uncomfortable and about as shocked and disturbed as can be expected that an innocent-looking child is instructing them on how to try and protect themselves by pushing tables and chairs against doors, placing paper over windows, and crouching on toilet seats in the bathroom. Then we see …
