Dutch government slashes highway speed limit to tackle climate change

(CNN)Motorists in the Netherlands will soon have to slow down to do their bit to tackle climate change. The Dutch government has little room for maneuver. Last year, it was told by a court to take urgent measures to reduce emissions. The court also ordered the government to ensure that the country’s emissions in 2020 will be at least 25% lower than those in 1990. The court’s decision forced the government to put a number of large construction projects on hold. Writing on his official Facebook account Wednesday, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the new speed limit was a “rotten measure,” but added it was necessary in order to protect jobs and builders. The Netherlands is particularly vulnerable to …

‘Medicare for All’ looks like a political loser for Democrats

Washington (CNN)The fault lines in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary are clear when it comes to health care. Obviously, it is not as simple as that. House races aren’t solely decided by where a candidate stands on a single issue — even one as high-profile and intensely felt as Medicare for All. But even when Abramowitz ran a regression model to control for other factors in these five dozen most competitive contests, he found similar results. “After controlling for all of the other variables affecting the outcomes of these contests, Democratic candidates who endorsed Medicare for All … the estimated coefficient of -4.6 indicates that support for Medicare for All cost Democratic candidates in these competitive districts almost five points …
